Is this really what it has come to?
I came across a post on a forum from a grant writer for a CDFI who is applying for FY ‘25 funding. It broke my heart.
“I have a question about honorifics used in the 424 and in the application. As one can see by my signature block, I am nonbinary and use they/them pronouns. In the CDFI application components, I use Mx. In light of the current administration, I guess I shouldn't use that. I don't want to hurt our chances from the beginning. Do you advise dropping the Mx and using Ms.? “
Is this really what it has come to? Preparing a funding proposal should be joyful, proclaiming our values, commitments, and accomplishments. Now, we approach it with fear and apprehension. I responded as follows:
“I admire you for posting this question……. My own opinion is that it will make no difference. Assuming that the NOFA will not be canceled, the question is whether applications will be reviewed against the formal evaluation criteria established in the administrative regulations. External reviewers are obligated to follow those criteria. I'll leave it at that. Heads up, and hearts open! Access to safe and affordable capital for all is a widely embraced principle in the United States and will endure. Good luck!”
I express my gratitude to our clients for continuing to collaborate to craft the most competitive funding applications possible, undaunted by their vision to finance a more inclusive and equitable economy!
